Kim Schuetz

Meet Ms. Kim Schuetz

Kim Schuetz is a seasoned oncology nurse based in Fall River, Wisconsin, with over two decades of experience in direct patient care and clinical support. In addition to her professional background, Kim is a passionate childhood cancer advocate and the mother of Austin Schuetz, the 21st pediatric patient in the world to receive CAR-T cell therapy. Their remarkable journey through treatment and recovery has been featured widely, including by the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT) and the Emily Whitehead Foundation.Since connecting with the Emily Whitehead Foundation over eight years ago, Kim has been a steadfast supporter, sharing her family’s story at major events such as the Believe Ball and engaging in peer support, advocacy, and public speaking across oncology nursing, patient communities, and industry audiences. As both a nurse and caregiver, Kim brings a unique dual perspective to her advocacy, rooted in clinical insight and personal resilience. She continues to champion awareness, equitable access to advanced therapies, and patient-centered care models across the oncology space.
Austin Schuetz

Meet Mr. Austin Schuetz

Austin Schuetz was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia shortly before his third birthday. Following multiple relapses, extensive chemotherapy, radiation, and a bone marrow transplant, his family was told that few treatment options remained. In October 2013, at age five, Austin became the 21st pediatric patient in the world to receive CAR T-cell therapy.Today, Austin is 18 years old and preparing for his senior year of high school. He works as a youth apprentice and CNC machine operator and hopes to pursue a career in the trades. Austin has shared his story through the Emily Whitehead Foundation to demonstrate the life-changing impact of innovative cancer research and advanced therapies. His experience offers a powerful reminder of what scientific progress makes possible for children and families facing difficult diagnoses.
